Last month, the junior class was honored to help kick off the grand opening of the Service in Action Nook, a service project opportunity presented by the National Veterans Memorial and Museum, COSI, the Columbus Metropolitan Library, and Nationwide. Our ninety-nine juniors wrote over 650 postcards of gratitude to veterans who participated in Honor Flight Columbus, an organization dedicated to honoring veterans with a trip to Washington DC to visit service and war memorials.

The goal of the Service in Action Nook is to make service projects more accessible to the public. The first nook, located in the Main Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, was dedicated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 17. A select group of juniors participated in the ceremony, and one student, Kalyn, was invited to speak to the audience about the importance the project held for him. “My mentor is a Marine veteran, and he’s made a huge positive impact on my life,” said Kalyn, “and I’m so grateful for his service not only to our country but his service to me. To participate in this project that honors veterans like him and be able to show my gratitude to people who fought for our freedom, it means the world to me.”

The ceremony was hosted by Dr. Frederic Bertley, CEO of the National Veterans Memorial and Museum and COSI, the latter of which is a CRC work-study partner. In lieu of a traditional ribbon cutting, the nook was dedicated with a dry ice cloud launch, which Kalyn got to participate in as well. After the ceremony, the students spent time mingling with Honor Flight veterans and sharing their experiences with each other.
